Battle Scenarios

1st Battle of St. Albans
(22 May 1455)

By Ian Beal

Background Situation

In March 1455, King Henry VI recovered from the long mental illness, which had caused the Duke of York to be Protector of the Realm and reclaimed the throne, dismissing the Duke of York from office and sending him and his colleagues back to their estates. The Duke of Somerset was released from the Tower of London and reinstated in the King's favour. This situation led the Duke of York and his colleagues to fear for their lives. York called his friends to arms and accompanied by Lords Salisbury and Warwick marched on London.

King Henry in the meantime, had left London for Leicester and when the news of the advance of York reached him, he set up his standard at St. Albans and waited.

The Armies

Obviously Wars of the Roses English (#179) but I would strongly suggest using either Ken Blackley's variations or those of Bernd Lehnhoff (DBM to DBA Conversions, see army 135), both of which can be found on the army variants page of this website.

Deployment

Lancastrians deploy in front of the light wood which masked the town, interestingly enough there was a river to the immediate right flank of the Lancastrian position, but this played no part in the deployment or battle and has not been included as part of the battlefield.

The Battle

The Yorkist centre laid down a barrage of arrows in support of attacks by both flanks, but both were repulsed. Warwick then concentrated on attacking the Lancastrian centre which fell back under the assault. In an attempt to prevent a breakthrough and their line being outflanked, the Lancastrians pulled back their flanks into line in the town itself. The Yorkists seeing this, advanced the rest of their army. This along with the strategic retreat was misinterpreted by the Lancastrian troops who took flight. Somerset led one last heroic (or stupid depending on your viewpoint) Lancastrian charge personally killing four men before he himself was cut down. The King, the Duke of Buckingham and the Earls of Devon and Dorset were captured, Clifford, Somerset, Stafford, Percy and Harington were among the slain. The whole action lasted half an hour.
