Unofficial Rules Variants

Ehlers' Chariots

By Jason Ehlers

  1. Treat Light Chariots as Light Horse (instead of Cavalry).

  2. Treat Heavy Chariots as Cavalry (instead of Knights).

Rationale

There is historical evidence to support this, and also many players have indicated that they believe the chariots as they are now are too strong. I just cannot fathom anybody using even a heavy chariot as a side-blinded battering ram. I think they may have seemed to have this effect to chroniclers, but only because they were being used to pursue an already broken enemy line. Also, a fragile (but agile) fifty-pound light chariot would be useless for a frontal assault, its most effective use must have been as it was designed, as a firing platform. The horses of the chariot era were small, think of the chariot as a precursor to the earlier saddle.
