Here's an idea to diminish the power of artillery in an historical and fun way. Normally, there are no repercussions if you roll bad with Artillery. Try this rule: if you roll a "1" and your opponent a "6" on a shot, the gun explodes, killing the crew (and General if attached), and is picked up as a lost element.
[Note: this rule should only be used with gunpowder-based artillery found in DBA army lists circa 1100-1500 AD.]
